Last night we, the Men In Black or MiB triumphed at the 3rd National Sports Complex Treasure Hunt organized from the Bukit Jalil National Stadium to the Perangsang Templer Golf Club in Selangor. We emerged victorious over 14 other media and non-media teams in the one-day Klang Valley hunt.
Our team, captained by Rohana Mustaffa and made up of Navigator Rajkumar King and Driver Salehuddin Yusof and yours truly became champions with a perfect score, the first in the three-year-old series.
We secured 130 points from 35 motoring hunt questions of 3 points each, four treasures of 5 points each and five one-point-each road safety questions, clocking in at the finish-control point ahead of its opening at the club.
There were other teams which had completed their hunt earlier than us but then time was not a consideration unless there was a tie (of points) at the top. The team with the highest score wins at a treasure hunt. The other teams were from the local media organizations, print and electronic and made up mostly by pressman and presswomen from the same office.
Yesterday's MiB was a TV3-TheSUN-BERNAMA-Metronews team and we had a flawless run yesterday and in treasure hunters’ lingo, completed the hunt with a podium finish. Rajkumar and me have a name for this -- Walk The Podium.
We also had a pole position at the flag-off point being the first team to arrive at the stadium at 0800hrs. The hunt manager was Time Out Solutions Sdn Bhd.
The bounty? We took home RM 2,500 worth of prizes and a lasting memory as the first and only team to have achieved the feat never seen before in its two earlier series. It was a difficult task -- competing against among the best of media treasure hunters, answering cryptic questions and treasure questions along the pre-determined routes, solving riddles, anagrams and wordplays and a couple of observation-based questions.
Our conquest at the hunt yesterday was among the best outings for MiB. As MiB we have had two previous perfect score victories and our off-shoot, the Ladies in Black or LiB also kapitaned by Rohana had their perfect score glory at the Kedah Tourism Media Hunt in 2006.
Other members of LiB were Jamaliah Monier, Rubiah Mohamed and Norhayati Jantan, all from Bernama.
The first time MiB became champions with a perfect score was in 2002 at a 4-state treasure hunt within Perak, Penang, Kedah and Perlis. It was a four-leg hunt and we took the third run’s trophy of the Pedu Lake Resort-Alor Setar route, defeating four other teams with equally perfect scores and 20 others. In one of the perfect score cars, there were 4 hunt sifus which we defeated soundly and stopped them in their track as they were attempting a hatrick of sort after having won the first two legs consecutively.
Members of MiB then were Rajkumar, Firdaus Abdullah of the NST, Cheree Mohd Gamma from RTM and myself.
The second perfect score victory was when MiB won the fourth Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad Media Treasure Hunt 2006 Kuala Lumpur-Penang. Not only that we were the first team to have a perfect score in the series we were also the first team to have won the series twice, having won the first Subang-KLIA route in 2003.
Members of the 2006 MiB were M.Govind Nair, Rajkumar, Rohana and myself while that of the 2003 MiB were Rajkumar, Rohana, Firdaus and yours truly. However, Rohana was abroad on an official assignment leaving to just the 3 of us (Rajkumar, Firdaus and me) to battle it out and won the challenge.
However, two most memorable hunts for Rohana, Rajkumar and me were the UEM Media Hunt from Kuala Lumpur to Seremban in 2005 in which we came out tops over the other 174 teams including the best in the media and UEM employees and their sponsors. We only dropped one question from the 45 given and solved-submitted 5 treasure questions and a host of the compulsory road safety questions.
While the majority of the teams at the hunt were with 4 hunters we did it with 3 -- Rohana, Rajkumar and me! And since we had beaten the who's who of media treasure hunters to be The Best of The Best, the most thrilling point was that we were greatly under-strength from the word go. However it did not deter us to give our best to be The Best!
The other was the 2004 Bernama Treasure Hunt from Kuala Lumpur to Bukit Merah in Perak. Rohana and me were with our boys -- Muhammad Zahir Zukri and Muhammad Zaim Zukri became the overall champions and the first Bernama team to have won back the trophy after 16 years. The last Bernama team did it in 1988.
Rajkumar’s MiB with Firdaus and Cheree was second in the overall position.
MiB now looks forward to the National Women Journalist Association (PERTAMA) Treasure Hunt on June 21 from Kuala Lumpur to the Legend Resort in Cherating, Pahang. MiB members this time around will be Rajkumar, Salehuddin, Kheirul Nazib who are both from TV3 and myself.
This is going to be another exciting hunt by huntmaster Govind. He will assume a different role this time around -- Clerk Of Course while Rohana, a BERNAMA Editor is the Chairman of Organizing Committee. Both are also members of MiB.
In short, while MiB will slug it out with the other teams for hunt prizes, we will also be up against the other MiB.
